E, H & W L College, Baron's Court, London
We conducted a feasibility study for the regeneration of an inefficient space at the Barons Court campus of Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College.
Located in an exposed and neglected corner of the site, the area was considered primarily as circulation space rather than a positive area of the campus. We wanted it to be integrated into the life of the college and proposed the insertion of a multifunctional pavilion and teaching block along with reorganisation of the circulation to make the area a focal point of the campus.
We would then roof over the space to create a weather protected courtyard. Light and air were priorities in our design and we decided the roof structure would be made from a lightweight steel and EFTE air inflated cushions, technology that was first used at the Eden Project in Cornwall. The proposed scheme would utilise this neglected space, turning it into a definitive feature of the campus.
